CNN Newsman Don Lemon is Pierson 2017 Graduation Speaker

The Sag Harbor School District will welcome Don Lemon, a CNN anchor and broadcast journalist, as its commencement speaker this weekend. “I will talk to the class about the world we live in” he said during an interview via Skype on April 25. “I’ll probably talk to you about freedom of the press, freedom of speech, campus life and, diversity” — topics Mr. Lemon said are important for college freshman to hear, and to understand.

Sag Harbor will celebrate the graduating class of 2017 at Pierson High School on June 24 at 5 p.m. As it has in the past, the ceremony will take place on the hill in front of the school, barring rain.

Speaking at the event will be Superintendent Katy Graves, Principal Jeff Nichols, Valedictorian Eve Bishop, Salutatorian Ella Parker, and Mr. Lemon.

Mr. Lemon, now a part time Sag Harbor resident, was secured as the speaker for
Saturday’s graduation exercises by Pierson High School senior and class president, Isabel Peters, who emailed the anchor asking him to deliver the address.

Mr. Lemon has his own two-hour segment on CNN Tonight. In his youth, Mr. Lemon
attended both Brooklyn College and Louisiana State College where he majored in broadcast journalism. In college, Mr. Lemon said he had people who tried to discourage him from pursuing his dreams and goals. “There was a professor that was nice to my peers but treated me differently,” he said. “He told me I was never going to make it as a journalist.”

While Mr. Lemon said this kind of discouragement can be common on some college
campuses, his passion, or “driving force,” as he called it, motivated him not to let someone dissuade him from his goals. “I was determined to prove him wrong” Mr. Lemon said.

Mr. Lemon said advice he would give to college students — or anyone, for that matter —would be “no one has to believe in you but yourself.” While determined to prove that professor wrong, because he believed in himself, Mr. Lemon added it was also a strong work ethic that enabled him to achieve his goals.

“If you think it’s going to be easy — don’t do it, if you think it’s going to be glamorous —don’t do it,” he said, noting it should not be the materialism of success that drives you to pursue a goal, but the experience one will gain. His first goal was to be like his dad, an attorney, Mr. Lemon said but added “I got to college and I wasn’t interested.” As he stated previously, passion had to do with his decision to switch his major. “I switched to journalism and here I am.” “I am genuinely excited to hear Mr. Lemon speak at our graduation this Saturday.

As a distinguished CNN anchor, it is an honored to be able to
celebrate this milestone with such a politically active and influential guest speaker, Ella Parker, salutatorian, said on Tuesday. Eve Bishop, the class valedictorian, added, “It means a lot to have Mr. Lemon speak at our graduation. I think having a commencement speaker who is so politically involved and knowledgeable will be extremely valuable. Our class is grateful he is taking time out of his busy schedule to share some advice and wisdom with us.”

It was a huge honor being able to interview Don Lemon and I am grateful he made the time to speak with me. Many thanks to Kathryn Menu the editor of the Sag Harbor Express for mentoring me and helping me with my very first byline

The 17th Annual Butch Dellecave Award

Jack Brown and Allura Leggard, 2017 Pierson,HS Dellecave Award Nominees
I am beyond honored to be the Pierson High School female Nominee for the 2017 Butch Dellecave award. This award
recognizes top male and female student-athlete for outstanding achievement in three areas - athletic proficiency, academics and community service. Each Suffolk high school nominates an exceptional male and female athlete who is superior in the classroom and a difference-maker in the community.

I wanted to end my high school senior year with going to the NY State Championship for Spring track, unfortunately that did not happen but it is ok because being nominated for this amazing award was the highlight of my high school athletic career.

Another Last... 2017 Pierson HS Athletic Awards

Wow, it is hard to believe that I have attended my last athletic awards dinner at Pierson HS. I having been dreaming of the last day of high school since the first day of Senior year and now that time is vastly approaching. In 2 weeks I will officially be a High school graduate and my journey as an adult making my own decisions regarding the rest of my life begins. The athletic awards dinner was everything I hoped it would be and it was beautiful.
I received the NYSHASAA Scholar Athlete,
MVP (Most Valuable Player) Spring Track & Field 2017
Section XI Gold Key Player Award (eight or more varsity seasons logged during high school career)
2017 Pierson High School Butch Dellecave Award Nominee, an award given to 1 boy and 1 girl from each HS in Suffolk county, requirements: Academics, community service, athletic

The award I was most proud to receive was the MVP, this award was voted by my team and of all my years on the team, I felt this was the year I most made a difference in the younger runners lives. I was not officially the Team Captain but I held those responsibilities and I leave knowing I taught them some good skills.

It was a wonderful feeling being recognized for my hard work and being rewarded with such prestigious awards. Thank you Pierson for ending my HS athletic career with a memory that I will never forget.

My last track meet as a High School Athlete

Wow.. I cannot believe that I have run my last high school track meet, I have been on a track team since I was in 7th grade. Unfortunately I did not end the way I wanted to end, it was not a good running day for me, but I made it to the finals for the 100.

It has been challenging I am filled with so much emotion both happy and sad times. I have dealt with injuries, team drama, disappointments, but I have also felt the extreme joy and the highlight of my HS track career was going to the State Championship for Winter Track in my junior year 2016, something that I had always dreamed of, many told me it was an impossible task and doubted my ability to get there. My parents always say the mind will dictate the body, want it, feel it, see it and you will accomplish it.

I was the first HS female athlete to ever go to the state championship for track at my high school. This accomplishment sits right at the top as the championship win in 2013 when the Pierson field Hockey team won the first state championship for our school.   I will always be a part of the Pierson History and 20 years from now when I return my name will still grace the athletic wall of fame.

My journey of running does not end, I have only scratched the surface, there is so much more that I have to bring. I will running on the Ithaca track team and I am so excited about being on a college team. I am excited to be working with Coach Potter whom I feel will push me to another level and I will explore so much about myself as an athlete.

This spring season I  added a new event to my list and that was
the long jump, in my mind I felt I could jump but I was never given the opportunity. I was told you need to be trained, we need you for this race, but I ended the season jumping 16.5 and I know I can do more. I am ready to be on a team with consistent training, I am ready for the next chapter of my journey. I see myself as the female Bolt, but only God knows what's in my future, but I am willing to work harder than everyone to accomplish this goal. I am ready for my new journey, Ithaca here I come.
